Puget Sound Energy’s board of directors has tapped Mary Kipp, president and CEO of El Paso Electric, to succeed Kimberly Harris.
Kipp will take on the additional role of CEO upon Harris’ retirement in January, the board said in a July 1 statement.
“In Mary, we have found a uniquely qualified leader who brings deep industry experience and shares our commitments to customers, to clean energy, and to being a key part of the community,” said Scott Armstrong, PSE board member and chair of the board’s search process.
El Paso Electric provides transmission and distribution service to about 421,000 retail and wholesale customers in a 10,000-square-mile area of the Rio Grande valley in west Texas and southern New Mexico. The company agreed in early June to be sold to J.P. Morgan Infrastructure Investments Fund for $4.3 billion, including debt.
Kipp began her career at EPE in 2007, and has held roles throughout the company with responsibility for divisions including regulatory and rates, risk management, human resources, external affairs, customer care, and environmental and safety. She was named president in 2014 and CEO a year later.
Prior to joining El Paso Electric she was a prosecuting attorney for FERC for four years. Kipp also worked as an attorney at El Paso Natural Gas and at Greenberg Traurig.
She holds a number of leadership roles outside of EPE, including chair of Smart Power Electric Alliance, deputy chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, chair of the Borderplex Alliance, and executive committee member of the Texas Business Leadership Council.
Kipp received her Bachelor of Arts degree cum laude from Williams College in Massachusetts and a Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law, and is an alumna of Exeter College, Oxford University.
“PSE is at the center of one of the most dynamic regions in the world,” Kipp said, in a statement. “It’s the opportunity of a lifetime to be able to join the team and lead their efforts to serve such an amazing area, to be part of their transition to a clean energy future, and to ensure PSE is our customers’ trusted energy partner. I look forward to continuing the wonderful work done by Kimberly and her team.”
