NW Natural has entered a 21-year fixed-fee agreement with Houston-based Archea Holdings for the annual purchase of up to 1 million MMBtu of renewable natural gas thermal certificates from their portfolio of RNG projects.

The agreement will commence in early 2022 and ramp up to the full amount in 2025. The RNG produced by Archaea will provide avoided methane emissions at U.S. landfills and displace conventional natural gas.

This marks the third RNG contract for NW Natural under Oregon Senate Bill 98, which supports renewable energy procurement and investment by natural gas utilities.

Earlier transactions include one with Element Markets from a wastewater treatment plant in New York City and a Wisconsin-based mixed-waste anaerobic digester facility (CU No. 2016 [7.3]).

The other contract is a project-development agreement with Tyson Foods for a facility in Nebraska (CU No. 1986 [12]).

Including the Archea contract, NW Natural has options to purchase or develop RNG and RNG RECs totaling about 3 percent of its annual sales volume in Oregon.
