Orange Grove Energy Center 0916

The Orange Grove Energy Center, located in San Diego County, is shown in an undated photo. The 96-MW peaker plant is in a Tier 3 fire-threat area and its operator allegedly did not conduct tests of its fire systems for several years.

The California Energy Commission at its Sept. 14 business meeting awarded about $24 million in grants and investments aimed at supporting energy technology research, development and deployment.

Among the grants was $5.6 million to the University of California system for hydrogen research and a $7-million package supporting the goal of reliable, equitable electric-vehicle charging.
